Short-Term Disability Coverage
Your STD coverage is automatically provided by SLB at no cost to you. It is intended to be a wage continuation benefit if you cannot work for a short time due to a non-work-related illness or injury. There are some differences in coverage, as noted below.
Employee Status | Onset of STD to 26 weeks (max. 6 months) | 27 weeks to 52 weeks (max. 12 months) |
---|---|---|
All Employees | 100% of Base Salary | 80% of Base Salary |
Legacy SLB Field Direct Employees | 130% of Base Salary | 110% of Base Salary |
Long-Term Disability Coverage
While few of us expect to be disabled, a serious illness or injury can happen to anyone. LTD insurance provides income protection if you become unable to work due to a non-work-related injury or illness, helping pay for essential expenses such as mortgage or rent, groceries, utilities, and family priorities.
- Your amount of coverage is determined by your Eligible Compensation and your LTD Option. If you chose a higher Option, or if your Eligible Compensation is higher, your payroll deduction would be higher.
- LTD premiums are employee-paid so that (under Canadian tax rules), benefit payments received during an LTD claim are tax-free. This means that you’ll get to keep more of this income at the time you need it most. See the table below for Your Long-Term Disability Plan* details.
- LTD coverage is a mandatory benefit for all employees. While you cannot opt out of this coverage, you can choose to claim the cost of your LTD premiums through your Personal Spending Account (PSA)—if you have directed any excess Flex dollars to it.
Coverage | Option 1 | Option 2 | Option 3 |
---|---|---|---|
Formula (based on eligible compensation) | 45% of first $5.5K, 32% of remainder | 55% of first $4K, 42% of remainder | 65% of first $2K, 53% of next $5K, 45% of remainder |
Indexing (COLA) (up to 3%) | No | No | Yes |
Maximum benefit | $15,000 per month | ||
Benefits payable to | Age 65, retirement, recovery, or death (earliest of) |
*Your LTD option is locked in, and an Evidence of Insurability (EOI) form is required for LTD increases during Annual Enrollment.
Employee Support While on Disability
SLB Canada is committed to the health and wellbeing of our employees and provides resources and programs to support your physical, mental and emotional health. Our disability management program provides employees with support and resources to help them navigate through this challenging time.
We recognize that recovery looks different for everyone. While on claim Sun Life may work with your medical practitioner(s) and treatment provider(s) on establishing a personal treatment plan. Treatment plans are reviewed on a periodic basis and adjusted as your condition changes. While on claim you may be asked to participate in programs providing you with quicker access to medical specialists or testing in the case of long wait times helping to reduce the duration of your claim.
We do not expect you to work while on disability, except where you’re medically cleared to work on modified duties. We believe that employees who participate in modified work programs recover sooner and return to regular duties faster than those who do not remain connection to their workplace. SLB Canada will look for work opportunities to accommodate your restrictions and limitations to help you connect to the workplace and return to regular duties faster.
Returning to work after an injury or illness can be stressful and not always seamless. Know that you have support available. Reach out your HR representative for more information.

Sun Life – Your Disability Claim Adjudicator
Sun Life acts as an independent third party to manage disability claims and also determine approval of STD and LTD benefits. Without limiting the scope of responsibility, Sun Life is responsible for adjudicating claims, monitoring disability status, coordinating assessments and treatment, using intervention services when wait times exceed three months, and supporting return-to-work planning.
Worker’s Compensation for Work-related Disability
Employees who require medical treatment other than first aid or who are absent from work due to a work-related illness/injury must apply to their respective provincial or territorial Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB). If an employee experiences a work-related illness or injury, regardless of the severity, the employee must immediately report the nature of the illness or injury to his or her immediate supervisor. WCB paperwork must be completed by the employee and supervisor and submitted to WCB within 72 hours.
