Whether it’s for a new job, a change in employment status or retirement, at some point we will all leave our employer. At this time there are many questions at the top of mind; the tips below will help to make the transition smoother.

Life, ADandD and Critical Illness Insurance Conversion Options

Guaranteed Life Insurance Conversion. You have the option to convert your group life insurance coverage to an individual plan through Sun Life. The Guaranteed Life Insurance conversion provides guaranteed amounts up to $200,000 of coverage with no health questions or medical tests. You must contact Sun Life within 31 days of the termination date. Please note, converting group life insurance to an individual plan allows an employee to convert their life insurance without having to submit proof of health, and therefore does not necessarily guarantee the best rate on the market.

My Life Choice

Instead of converting your group life insurance coverage, you may be eligible for My Life Choice with Sun Life. This allows you to continue your current level of life insurance coverage (up to a maximum of $1 million) under your own individual plan. You must contact Sun Life within 60 days of leaving the group plan and you will be asked health questions to confirm your eligibility and level of coverage you qualify for. Again, this does not necessarily guarantee the best rate on the market.

If you wish to convert or continue your life insurance coverage with Sun Life, please call the Sun Life Client Solutions Centre at 1-877-893-9893. This will need to be done within 31 days of the termination date.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (ADandD) Insurance

You have the option to convert your ADandD insurance coverage to an individual plan, within 60 days following the date termination. You may elect an amount of Principal Sum equal to or lower than the amount of Principal Sum in force under all policies issued to your employer by the insurer to a maximum of $500,000.00.

Critical Illness

If you currently have group coverage for Critical Illness insurance, your coverage is portable once your group benefits terminate. You can port up to a maximum of $100,000.00 You, your spouse, and children are eligible to maintain critical insurance coverage without proof of good health by applying within 31 days of the termination date.

Continuity of life insurance after leaving your employer

Did you have life insurance through your group benefits? You may be able to replace that coverage after leaving your job. Apply online today at www.sunlife.ca

Sun Life is the SLB Retirement Savings Plan Administrator. They will assist you and provide details on what you can do with your money.

What to expect 

Following your final pay with SLB, Sun Life will be notified of your termination/retirement and your status with Sun Life will be updated from active to terminated. This will trigger a separation package that will be processed within 10 business days and mailed to the address on file with Sun Life. Mailing times will vary depending on your location. This package will include your account balances and the choices about what to do with your money. You do not need to wait to receive this package to learn about your choices. You can contact Sun Life at anytime to speak with a licensed Financial Consultant at no charge to discuss your options. You will continue to be able to view your account balances online at anytime.

How to reach Sun Life:

Any accrued and unused vacation time will be paid out on your final paycheck. If you have questions about your ROE or T4 contact myAskHR. This is a service available to past SLB employees.

SLB recognizes that employees leaving the company may continue to need periodic support with HR-related questions. We are committed to assisting you with these queries through ESM Alumni Service Center, which is accessible from the internet. Once registered, you will be able to submit your queries and benefit from the support of our subject-matter experts. These HR specialists will have access to the information related to your career history and any post-employment benefits with SLB.

A ESM Alumni Service Center account will be automatically created for you within two weeks after the termination process has been completed. The ESM Alumni Service Center account will only be automatically created if you provide personal email address to your local HR. Following account creation, you can expect an email that will contain your account details. If you did not provide an email, you can still set-up an account by following the alternative steps to access ESM Alumni Service Center.

Alternative steps to access ESM Alumni Service Center:

  1. Create an account on ESM Alumni Service Center:
    • Access the ESM Alumni Service Center.
    • Complete the registration form and save. It is essential that you provide complete and accurate information to avoid the risk of your application being denied. The information you submitted will be verified and you will receive a notification once the account creation is validated. You will receive your login credentials in a separate e-mail.
  2. Submit your query on ESM Alumni Service Center:
    • Access the ESM Alumni Service Center.
    • Click the “Login page” link on the top of the page and enter your credentials, then click “Login”.
    • Submit your query.
